Hard Drive Degausser & Tape Degausser HD-3XTL IRONCLAD

Erasure Verification System

In just seconds, the HD-3XTL hard drive degausser with IRONCLAD verification completely erases all data on hard drives and tape while also verifying and documenting the erasure.  As the media travels down the exit slide, Garner's exclusive IRONCLAD system automatically captures a JPG image of the media and generates a proof-of-erasure and destruction certificate for audit and archival purposes. The HD-3XTL's 10,000 gauss field with an oversized media slot will permanently erase all data on high-coercivity (magnetic) hard drives and tape up to 1.7" in height.

HD-3XTL IRONCLAD Data Eliminator Benefits & Features

  • 10,000 gauss completely erases all data on hard drives and tapes
  • Erases and verifies up to 240 pieces of media per hour
  • Tracks and stores media serial numbers, user ID, witness ID, and date in a password-protected system
  • Provides proof media was degaussed by capturing a JPG image of the hard drive immediately after degaussing
  • Numerically records gauss field strength
  • Informs operator and records the erasure results immediately after each cycle with green "Pass" or red "Fail"
  • If used with the PD-5 hard drive and solid-state destroyer, records, and documents the crush depth of the PD-5
  • Generates Certificates of Erasure and Destruction with images of the media
  • Generates exportable JPG images and destruction results for audit and archival purposes in PDF, CSV, and Excel file formats
  • IRONCLAD export options: Flash, ethernet, or optional optical media burner
  • Operates in 2 modes: "Verification Mode" with prompts for new operators; and "Processing Mode" for faster processing
  • UL, IEC, CSA, CE and RCM certified
  • TAA compliant
  • FCC compliant

Data Security Best Practices: Degauss Before you Destroy

  • Physical destruction (i.e., shredding, crushing, piercing, bending) of hard drives without first being degaussed leaves data behind.  In fact, a shredded but un-degaussed 2 mm²  hard drive fragment can contain the equivalent of approximately 504,000 pages of paper containing sensitive and confidential data.
  • The 10,000 gauss field of the high-volume HD-3XTL degausser magnetically erases all data on hard drives making them safe and secure for disposal.  It is essential that every hard drive be degaussed prior to shredding, crushing, or disposal to ensure the data is unrecoverable.
  • Although physical destruction of a hard drive is not necessary after the drive has been degaussed, physically damaging the hard drive casing and bending the disk platters provides visual confirmation that the hard drive has been securely processed; discourages unscrupulous (but fruitless) attempts to retrieve data from the drive; and indicates the drive is ready to leave the controlled environment for disposal.

  • Note:  Solid-state media cannot be degaussed.  Physical destruction of the media with the SSD-1 solid-state destroyer is recommended prior to the media leaving its secure environment.

Degauss vs. Overwrite

Overwriting is a method where a random pattern of usually "1" and "0" is written to every part of the drive, frequently three times, to obliterate the underlying data.  The advantage of this method is the drive can be re-used.  The disadvantages are:  it takes a skilled operator to ensure the overwriting is done correctly; non-functioning sectors of the hard drive cannot be overwritten allowing data to remain on the drive; it takes a considerable amount of time-hours, and therefore electricity; and it is not regarded as failsafe, or permissible for the highest data security standards such as the NSA, CIA, or DoD.

Degaussing is the process of exposing the media to a strong magnetic field of sufficient strength to magnetically destroy the data.  The advantages of degaussing are:  a skilled operator is not required to operate a degausser; the magnetic field destroys all the data on the drive in approximately 1/10 of a second regardless of whether the drive is functioning or non-functioning. Degaussing is recognized by the NSA and DoD as an appropriate method of secure data destruction.  The disadvantage of degaussing is the hard drive cannot be re-used.

After degaussing, the data on a degaussed hard drive simply no longer exists.
